THE LOST EVIDENCE Episode 2

Hi guys, welcome back, in case you missed the first episode of this series, you can read it here . Without much ado, I present to you the second episode in the series, THE LOST EVIDENCE.

It was 05:33 am on Sunday and the three boys were already at the Police station, waiting on the D.P.O. or anybody who cared to attend to them. Once any of the constable asked who they were there for and they mentioned their friend, Onos, he/she’s countenance quickly changed into a dismissive one and with a rather spiteful look, carried on with his or her job, now they have a first-hand experience of what it feels like being a friend or family of an accused, especially in a murder case. Word had been passed to Onos’ parents later the previous night and with their early arrival, one needn’t be a rocket scientist to know they didn’t sleep through the night.

It was the first time the boys got to see Onos’ parents, a rather finely shaped man in his late sixties but polished with wealth, he had managed to keep fresh and look younger, same goes for his light-skinned mother, that explains Onos’ complexion too, with all the worry and fear plastered over the woman’s face, she still looked beautiful, Banji noted this and wished to see more of her despite the situation on ground, he was such a womanizer without shame or reproach. The police officers were quick to attend to these influential people and it was clearly visible that they sympathized, at least, faked sympathy that it was their son who was involved in the unfortunate mess.Onos was produced from the holding cell and it was clear what a day behind bars could do to a man, he didn’t look like the young man who had been taken behind bars barely 24hours ago, his head bowed, clearly something more than his mortal body had been conquered, his ego and pride had been shattered along with.

The D.P.O. came in at around 09:00am and all he would have to say to the parents of the accused was to get a lawyer ready as investigations were in place. He was touched with sympathy at the bewildered and tearful mother that he soothingly assured her Onos would be vindicated – if he had nothing to do with the death of the young lady -, but as the case stood, they’ll need a concrete evidence to disprove whatever is already on ground.

“Autopsy report came in yesterday towards the close of work” said the familiar voice of the family lawyer, there’s good news and there’s bad news, it’s of no good asking which to share first in this situation so I’ll delve right into it; there was another finger print identified on the deceased’s body, there seem to be no match for it yet as the police report but the bad part is, Onos’ prints was all over the deceased and his prints did a pretty good job masking the third fingerprints which makes it harder for identification, I presume he was trying to revive her using one of those methods taught to them at the NYSC camp, the evidences are solid enough for the prosecuting lawyer to build a case around not to talk of finding the dead body in his room, to be quite frank, He’ll be lucky to get life imprisonment, but hopefully, more evidence will be found, till then, I’ll keep you abreast of new findings.

The police had later found out from interviewing people around that there had been a loud scream earlier in the middle of the night, at least three neighbours had attested to the fact, and the autopsy had went further in stating that the lady was strangled and with the position she was found in, she had clearly struggled till her last breath, a possible explanation would be burglary but then, nothing was out of place or stolen, no sign of forced entry and all these couldn’t have happened without waking Onos if his sleep or black out story was ever to go by, the D.P.O himself was puzzled at this point, his boys had exhausted almost all methods they used in extracting information, yet, Onos was yet to break, he was either an hardened liar or telling the truth. He was puzzled far more than he had been in recent times, he had to get to the bottom of it all.

Tunde and two other friend had contemplated a lot about informing Onos’ girlfriend, she had always had the distrust look whenever she came visiting him, she always knew he was up to something, cheating on her maybe, but the three other friends had always done a good cover-up job for him, yet she sensed something was fishy, they dreaded to tell her she thought right, that they are 3 lying bastards who have lied to her over and over in the past to save their friend and probably would lie again if the circumstances were the same. After so much deliberation, they called her up, Gloria was astounded, she went silent on the phone for almost 30 seconds, they waited till she could take it all in as the phone was on speaker, she stuttered, the line went silent, “Damn these network providers!”. Banji called back but her number was switched off, they knew what this meant, she’s clean and deserves to cut ties, after all, there is no obligation to see her stand with him through the hard times, it was 4 days now since their friend got thrown behind bars, a rough 4 days and nights it had been.

Episode 3 comes out in a few days, thanks for reading.
